Sneak Peek: See inside the 2023 Tour of Remodeled Homes (PHOTOS)

The Tour of Remodeled Homes returns this weekend with 12 homes on display.

The annual event, taking place Aug. 12 and 13, allows Louisville residents to tour recently remodeled homes across Jefferson and Oldham counties, seeing the craftsmanship firsthand and receiving expert remodeling advice and insights from Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville’s registered remodelers.

One of those remodelers is Buttorff Design & Construction. Owner Brandon Buttorff said the company completed a major kitchen, mudroom, master bath and closet remodel on the home at 611 Woodlake Drive in the Lake Forest neighborhood.

The renovation, which totaled about 1,800 square feet, took about five months. Buttorff has participated in the tour several times, and one question he often gets is “how long will a remodel take?”

“My direct response is, ‘Not as fast as you would like it to,’” he joked. “But you dedicate yourself, as a professional, to doing it as fast as possible and communicating the updates to the schedule as they come along.”

Buttorff Design & Construction remodeled 611 Woodlake Dr. for the 2023 Tour of Remodeled Homes.

Companies are facing shortages on materials (although not as bad as two years ago) and labor. Buttorff said the latter of the two is still plaguing the industry in extreme ways, which can cause delays in remodels.

Buttorff included several recent trends in the company’s project this year. In the kitchen, he said large kitchen islands and floor-to-ceiling cabinets are still popular design features.

Another is full-height splashes, which refers to the counter tops extending up the kitchen backsplash. And while all white is still popular among homeowners, Buttorff said little pops of color are starting to come back, like gold and champagne bronze.

“We have a large, stained island which still gives us earthy, softer colors and not just a stark white kitchen,” Buttorff said.

In the bathroom, the remodeler created a wet room, which features the bathtub in a 10-foot by 10-foot shower. And in the master closet, the team added custom wood shelving and natural daylight.

One trend that is on its way out is the open-concept floor plan. Both Buttorff and Brandon Fields, owner of Twin Spires Remodeling, told me that.

“It’s actually nice to have the more homey, cozy spaces,” Fields said. “And we’re really figuring out ways to have that open space, where you can connect with multiple rooms, while at the same time, each individual space being its own so that it could hold its own conversation or have its own you know, separate feel when multiple things in the house are going on.”

Twin Spires has two houses in the event this year. One is 1527 Sylvan Way, while the other is 2106 New Market Drive. Both were entire home remodels, with the first totaling 4,600 square feet and the second totaling 2,500 square feet.

2106 New Market Dr. was remodeled by Twin Spires Remodeling for the 2023 Tour of Remodeled Homes.

For the house on Sylvan Way, Fields said the homeowners loved the location, but the size and layout of the house wasn’t functional for them. The company adjusted the size and shape of every room to better fit their needs.

It included updating the primary suite and bath, enhancing the flow of the first floor when hosting guests, and creating an entertainment space in the basement.

The house on New Market Drive actually belongs to one of the co-owners of Twin Spires and architect with the firm. With a new baby on the way, he needed a space that would be better suited for a family.

The 2023 Tour of Remodeled Homes will be Saturday and Sunday, Aug.12 and 13. Homes will open at noon and close at 6 p.m. both days. Pre-sale tickets are $12 (all inclusive) and available online at www.tourofremodeledhomes.net. Tickets may be purchased at any home for $15 during the event.

The event is sponsored by Bonnycastle Appliance TV and Home Supply, Granite America, My Southern Home TV and Century Entertainment & Furnishings.
