The people living in the Gaslamp Quarter of the city trend towards a bridge between Generation Z and millennials, with plenty to do and plenty to see in the area. The type of home you might be able to buy here seems to be just the kind a young professional would enjoy.
There are plenty of condos available where storefronts are at street level, and the living units will rise up above that. One-person households make up over two-thirds of the Gaslamp Quarter, with a typical income of over $240,000. As of September 2022, the median home sale price is $550,000.
Perhaps you're looking to live among those who have had more life experiences. If that's the case, there are plenty of 55+ communities around San Diego County. Some of these communities are a cluster of homes run under an HOA. One prime example can be found at Auberge at del Sur, nestled in the hills north of the city center. 
There are varying degrees of adult communities as well. Many come in the form of apartment communities that have a host of activities for seniors that can and desire to live independently. Other facilities include those that offer more hands-on amenities, such as a nursing staff onsite for those who need more assistance in their later years.
If you find yourself falling in love with the San Diego area, but it's just not realistic to pull up stakes and relocate yourself permanently, there are options for you too. You can always book a hotel or an Airbnb for each trip you want to make out west, or you can buy a timeshare property. Coronado Beach Resort is just a few blocks from beautiful beaches (including some very dog-friendly ones) and the training ground for the United States Navy SEALs. 
Other people buy vacation homes to rent out during the times they're not there. These not only give you a place to stay while you're in the city, but also to earn revenue when you're away.
