Patti Payne's Cool Pads: Owners of Black Nugget Estate in Issaquah put mansion up for sale

A European contemporary mansion dubbed “Black Nugget Estate” on Issaquah’s Old Black Nugget Road is up for sale, listed at $6.99 million.

It belongs to Kyle and Lida Buckner, a retired couple, who worked in public relations and marketing, respectively.

They had been looking for a home away from city life, knowing that they wanted a family, and fell in love with the 20-acre property for its privacy and location. The property backed up to 1,200 acres of park and the Duthy Hill Trail.

They bought the land in 1996 and hired architect Jim Castanes to build their dream home.

“When getting to know us, he said we like simple monuments,” Lida said.

If this gated mansion is their simple monument, it certainly has everything anyone could ever need for a full life with children.

There are five large bedrooms with the primary suite in its own wing.

“That’s so the kids could be as loud as they want,” Lida said.

There’s a sizeable chef’s kitchen and floors throughout are similar to the cement ones in Starbucks headquarters. The property also includes an additional 3,700-square-foot building with an indoor sports court, batting cage, expansive gym, kitchen and a huge gathering area.

“A party place,” said Kyle, pointing out that they held endless fundraisers there for Swedish and other organizations. “Pat Monahan from (the band) Train sang in our backyard.”

The Buckners said the home was always a gathering place, and in the early days, the 1.5-mile road leading to it was gravel.

“There was an easement for all of us on that road,” she said, ticking down names like Ken Griffey Jr., Jay Buhner, Dave Valle and Kenny Easley who were neighbors there, often riding their ATVS along the path.

The Buckners, who also have a property in Arizona, are now in a smaller house that better fits their lifestyle.

“Family is really important to us. We like to stick together. And that’s a pretty big house for the two of us,” she said. “Times are changing.”

The listing brokers are Lynn Crane and Barb Pexa from Keller Williams Realty Bellevue.
